Wolf Pack

Without unity even the best organizations or teams will fall. It is vital that we remain selfless and work toward common goals rather than individual glory.

"Effectiveness and productivity are most likely diminished when you are plagued with individuals who view your team as secondary to their own interests." (p. 126)

The best way to defeat this mentality is to have a team of individuals that are eager to share the glory and slow to take the credit.

I'm actually going to take the question for this chapter directly from this chapter...

On page 124 Coach Wooden asks, "What is the impact of a negligible producer on other team members?" Think of a negligible producer as someone who doesn't contribute as much as they could to the team whether because they are focused too much on themselves, are lazy, or whatever the case may be.

On the topic of the UCLA team picture, Wooden states that "No individual on the team got special treatment or more space in the picture because of talent, seniority, past contributions, press clippings, race, or religion...the star of the team is the team." Unity is critical and should be exercised throughout the season so that no one is above anyone else at the end. Equality brings unity...no special treatment.

    A negligible producer on the team causes disunity and is cancerous. Either he shapes up or he leaves.

  3. If there is one person that thinks they're a big shot, they're probably going to try showing off. They could mess up and hurt the team. Someone that is a negligible producer tears apart a team with hurtful comments or actions. "The star of the team is the team." No one should get special treatment.

  4. "Showing off or doing something contrived to gain attention for oneself not only demeans that individual, it is dismissive of the effort made by all the other team members." When there is one person that always shows off it hurts the team, even if they accomplish what they were trying to. By taking all the credit, it may make the rest of the team either feel like they aren't good or it might cause the relationship with that person to suffer. To be the best team you can be, you must have a good relationship with everyone on the team.

  5. Negligible producers bring down the quality of the team. Without the maximum effort and consistency of a team member the team will not be as strong as possible. From coach wooden, "It takes 10 hands to make a basket." With everyones participation and maximum effort the goal will not be reached. When another is thinking of themselves rather then the others on the team it will never get them anywhere. It would rather just hurt the team.

  6. Okay i'm back and i get it. negligible producers cause the team to have to pull extra hours i could say in order to complete both their own projects and the negligible producers projects.
    "acknowledging top producers does not always mean it has to be done publically. it is often more effective to praise a top producer privately. it give the superstar the deserved recognition without envy or resentment from the other team members." this quote is 100% true because if their is envy or resentment their is a change in the production of other team members which could easily be a good thing but is often a bad thing.

    True, when there's a player who really stands out, sometimes we must hammer them back down to being average. This way, the team gets the spotlight, not an individual.
    However, while a distinguishable figure should be stopped sometimes, a negligible producer must always be stopped. With this kind of person laying around, it is very difficult for the team to shine.

  8. I think that really the other members just have to pick up the slack. If it's a constant thing then its an issue but the point of having a team is being able to support one another. So if someone is having a rough few weeks, they shouldn't be labled as lazy in my opinion, but the rest of the team ought to be willing to pick up the slack for them.

  9. It is easy to pick out a negligible player because when everyon else is striving to improve for the betterment of the team, that one is just all about himself. To deal with a player like this you fist ask them, "whats up, why are you slacking off." If it continues then you tell them to pick it up or consequences will ensue. If it still progresses than removal is the proper step for the overall success of the team
